Stay Hydrated. Why Hydration Matters.
If there’s one habit that impacts your training, recovery, and sleep more than people realize, it’s proper hydration. Not just drinking more water, but actually keeping that water where your body needs it most.
In my decades of coaching, I’ve seen firsthand how dialing in hydration can be a game changer for everyone: athletes, parents, busy professionals, and anyone trying to feel and function better.
Hydration Isn’t Just Water
When most people think about staying hydrated, they think about carrying around a big water bottle. But true hydration is about how your body absorbs and uses that water — and that’s where mineralization comes in.
Your body needs a balance of key electrolytes to move water into your cells and keep them working properly:
Sodium: Regulates fluid balance, supports muscle contractions, nerve function, and nutrient absorption.
Potassium: Helps muscles fire and supports heart function.
Magnesium and Calcium: Crucial for muscle function, hydration at the cellular level, and recovery.
Trace minerals like zinc and chloride help with immunity, enzyme activity, and pH balance.
Why does salt (sodium) get so much focus?
Sodium is one of the most important electrolytes. Without enough of it — especially when you’re sweating during training — your body struggles to hold onto the water you drink. Low sodium can lead to cramping, dizziness, fatigue, and weaker performance.
Early in my career, I thought cutting salt would make me look leaner. I was wrong. Instead, I felt flat, my energy dropped, and my training suffered. Once I learned the science and added the right minerals back in, everything improved: my hydration, energy, and results.
Every time you sweat, you lose water and minerals. Even a slight drop in hydration can noticeably hurt your performance.
